Originally founded in 1989 by Robert Darch, the studio moved its location in January 2004 from the Kitsilano neighbourhood to the Old Mushroom Studio building at 1234 West 6th, Vancouver (Near Granville Island) under the guidance of world-renowned studio designer John Vrtacic. Hipposonic is now a part of Fader Mountain Sound, residing in what was the infamous, Little Mountain Sound "Studio B" - Fader Mountain Sound's largest space.
Over the years Hipposonic has had a wide variety of clients, Canadian and international, including Colin Linden, Tom Cochrane, Bif Naked, Delerium, Jessie Farrell, BTO, Econoline Crush, Skinny Puppy, K-Os, Kinnie Starr, Selena Gomez, KISS, Lamb of God, Children of Bodom, James Brown, Wu-Tang Clan, Gob, Hot Hot Heat, Chris Issak, Strapping Young Lad, Boom Desjardins, Marianas Trench, Daniel Wesley, Incura, Hedley, Louis Burns, The Latency, 22Century , 5440, Jakalope, Hey Ocean, Mother Mother and many more.
Broken Robot Audio
Broken Robot Audio has been a commercial sound studio in Vancouver, Canada for over a decade. It's our combined devotion to audio alongside years of industry experience that sets our level of creativity for sound capturing, creation and design apart. Our studios sit close to the heart of downtown Vancouver in what was Studio "C" inside the infamous, Little Mountain Sound Studios. It's real studio spaces like these that inspired those that came before us, and continue to inspire both founders (Daniel Byrne and Paul Boechler) to this day.
Ben Kaplan has established a reputation in the business as a guy with great ears, a lot of musical talent, a Pro Tools whiz and bringing creativity, beauty and perfection to every recording. Learning directly from producing legend Jack Richardson, he has worked in studios across North America and the UK recording a wide variety of genres. Ben is now based in Vancouver as a producer, engineer, mixer, programmer, and is also one of the founders of Fader Mountain Sound. He has a long list of credits including Hedley, Mother Mother, Rise Against, Shakira, Gallows, Trapt, Ten Second Epic, Atreyu and Chevelle. Ben’s work on Hedley’s last album, "Storms" garnered the band a Juno for "Pop Album of the Year" in 2012. Ben also engineered Biffy Clyro’s critically acclaimed album, "Only Revolutions" which was nominated for the UK’s prestigious Mercury Award in 2010, and has recently worked on their latest, eagerly anticipated double album, "Opposites" which garnered the band their first #1 album in the UK as well as best album of the year at the 2013 Kerrang awards.
CPS Mastering's owner and engineer is Brock McFarlane. He began his career in audio studying physics at the University of Alberta, this led to the audio engineering program at the Pacific Audio Visual Institute in Vancouver, where Brock received his honours diploma. He went on to work as an engineer at the infamous Hipposonic and Mushroom Studios, working on countless records before opening CPS mastering in 2008.
This studio, often referred to as 'The Spaceship', has been extensively treated, creating a pristine listening environment and featuring an impeccable monitoring system. You can't fix something if you can't hear it, and his beautiful ATC SCM-100ASL monitors give him all the insight he needs to make informed decisions.
